BBC NEWS | Technology | Virgin bans 'fire hazard' laptops
No laptop usage on planes?!?!?!?!
At first you might think this is because of a threat to airline security and terrorism, but the real reason is because of the two large battery recalls by Dell and Apple in recent months. 5.8 million batteries were recalled by the two computer hardware giants because of fire and explosion risks related to overcharging. Passengers are asked to remove all batteries prior to boarding the aircraft, wrapped up, and placed in their carry on luggage (max of 2 batteries per passenger). Only travelers who are in first class or some limited business class seats will be able to use their laptops by using the included power socket. All other passengers are not allowed to use their laptops.
Three airlines in the world now are enforcing this ban; Virgin Atlantic out of Britain, Qantas out of Australia, and Korean Air out of the Koreas. All of these airlines offer long distance international flights leaving passengers to stay occupied some other way during these long flights.
